Number Workshops
The Learning Box offers high quality, engaging, child-specific numeracy support in the form of small group workshops that focus on different areas of the Mathematics curriculum, developing a range of key skills needed to succeed in number across primary school and beyond.
Star Club
Years 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6
Our Star Club Mini Classes have revolutionised “maths tutoring”, creating engaging, purposeful and creative spaces for children to consolidate their maths learning and build confidence alongside high quality teachers in small groups.
This workshops focuses on a year groups key focus areas in mathematics across a 10-week workshop programme. Children work through tasks that support and deepen their knowledge of number sense, place value and key problem solving and reasoning strategies to develop them into thoughtful, competent mathematicians. We use a mastery approach in which children engage in maths through concrete resources, pictorial representations and ultimately access a fluent understanding with concepts.
Across the hour, our sessions are chunked into 3 areas -
1. Fluency
2. New learning
3. Problem solving/reasoning
They start by spending 10 minutes on a short burst fluency task which will test basic retrieval skills such as timetables knowledge and ability to answer questions without using longer methods of calculation. They then move on to their new learning section, which are Y3 concepts that are taught and then practised on whiteboards and in their work booklets. Finally the lesson ends with a combination of problem solving tasks, as well as some non verbal reasoning questions and some trickier multi-step problems. They receive homework linked to new learning each week.

How does Star Club work?
Each workshop spans the course of a half term - therefore a workshop is generally 5/6 weeks long. Children will be with the same small group each week, receive a booklet that they will work through alongside a member of The Learning Box team, and be given activities to complete over the course of each week independently at home.
At the end of the workshop, children will receive a report which outlines what has been learnt, what their particular behaviours for learning are and their strengths and weaknesses. This provides parents with an insight into areas they might like to develop further.
Spaces for the following half terms workshops are released in stages: firstly to parents who already have a space in a group, then to parents who have expressed interest but did not get a space initially, and finally to the rest of the public.
Our mini classes involve a range of fun and focused mathematical activities to broaden and deepen children’s learning and prepare them for year 6 and beyond..
We are very happy to see the spaces being nabbed quickly, so if you are interested in what we have to offer then please do let us know so we can add your name onto the early bird list!
